Artificial Intelligence, What is it all about?

What is an Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI as described by Minsky and McCarthy, is any task done by a program or machine, whereas if a human was supposed to perform the same task. We would say the human had to apply intelligence to accomplish the task.

AI systems will typically show at least some of the following behaviors associated with human intelligence:

  • learning,
  • planning,
  • reasoning,
  • problem solving,
  • knowledge representation,
  • perception,
  • motion and manipulation
  • social intelligence and creativity.

What Can AI do for Us

So many of our handheld devices from the smartphones, smart TVs and even Smart Homes are all powered by AI systems the same goes with Virtual Assistants, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri.

AI also recommends what you should buy next online, recognizes who and what is in a photo, detects spam or credit card fraud, reminds you of meetings, carries out important calls and reminders. In other words,  the list is endless.

Different types of AI

There are Two broad types of AI

  1. Narrow AI
  2. General AI

Narrow AI

Narrow AI are systems that have been taught or learned how to carry out specific tasks without being explicitly programmed how to do so. In other words, these systems can only do specific tasks, Hence the name, Narrow AI.

Apple’s Siri

What we see in computers today are all based on Narrow AI systems. For instance, the speech and language recognition of the Siri virtual assistant, the vision-recognition systems of self-driving cars and, the recommendations that suggest products you might like based on what you bought in the past.

What can Narrow AI do

Alexa

There are a vast number of emerging applications, some are:

  • Interpreting video feeds from drones.
  • Carrying out visual inspections of infrastructure such as oil pipelines, etc.
  • Organizing personal and business calendars.
  • Responding to simple customer-service queries.
  • Coordinating with other intelligent systems to carry out tasks like booking a hotel at a suitable time and location.
  • Helping radiologists to spot potential tumors in X-rays.
  • Flagging inappropriate content online.
  • Detecting wear and tear in elevators from data gathered by IoT devices and moreover, the list goes on and on.

General AI

The General Artificial Intelligence is very different from the Narrow AI. In fact, it is the type of adaptable intellect found in humans because it is a flexible form of intelligence capable of learning how to carry out vastly different tasks. Such as, from hair-cutting to building spreadsheets, or to reasoning about a wide variety of topics based on its accumulated experience.

AGI

Now, isn’t that amazing? But hold your horns, This type of AI is only seen on movies and AI experts are fiercely divided on how soon it will become a reality.

In 2012/2013, A result from the research conducted by AI Experts, Vincent C Müller and philosopher Nick Bostrom showed that AGI systems will be developed and fully functional between 2040 to 2050 and rises by 90% in 2075.

The experts even went further to predict Super-intelligence, which Bostrom defines as “Any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest”. However, Super-intelligence is predicted to be achieve some 30 years after the achievement of AGI.
